This elementary school in the French school board is conveniently close to the Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory. Green Thumbs came to the school to run worm-composting workshops in 2008, and this winter, we delivered a variety of food and media literacy programs at Gabrielle-Roy. When the parent council gave the go-ahead for the construction of a small food garden this spring, all of the primary classes came to start seedlings with us at Allan Gardens. Here they also learned about composting and the needs of plants. We delivered their seedlings and transplanted with each class in June, also staffing some informal “garden clubs” during recess, due to student interest. This summer, we are working with the on-site daycare, Garderie La Farandole, to continue to care for the garden, and we look forward to the fall when we can offer tasting, harvesting and seed-saving workshops to all the students.
Cette école élémentaire du Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-ouest est située à proximité du jardin d’hiver pour enfants de la serre Allan Gardens. Pouces Verts est venu à l’école en 2008 pour donner des ateliers de lombricompostage, et cet hiver, nous avons donné des ateliers sur la lecture des médias et la nutrition à Gabrielle Roy. Lorsque le conseil des parents ont approuvé la construction d’un petit jardin potager ce printemps, toutes les classes primaires sont venues faire des semis avec nous a la serre d’Allan Gardens. En même temps, les élèves ont découvert le compostage et les besoins des plantes. Nous avons apporté les semis que nous avons transplanté avec chaque classe au mois de juin, et nous avons animé le jardin pendant quelques récréations, dû à l’intérêt des élèves. Cet été, nous travaillons avec la garderie La Farandole pour continuer à s’occuper du jardin, et nous avons hâte pour la rentrée, lorsque nous allons offrir aux élèves des ateliers de récolte, de dégustation et de préservation des semences.
